The night passed by in a swift rush, and before anyone knew it, the fateful day had arrived.
They all had everything ready. Spoony and Insano carried a bunch of technological-looking weapons and devices, and Marzgurl and Iron Liz were both decked out in their best armour. To say nothing of Angry Joe and Lisa, who were both so ludicrously armed to the teeth it was a wonder they didn't collapse.
“Check me out!” Lisa bubbled excitedly, brandishing her Tommy gun with great gusto. “I'm a regular Sarah Palin!”
“Lieutenant!” Joe reprimanded sharply, “I've told you before, when the Joe army makes a comparative reference, it's to something that's for America!”
“Okay, okay...I guess I'm just Hillary Clinton, then. WITH GUUUUUNS!!!”
“Less sensible, more patriotic. I like it.”
As for Linkara, he had decided to work best light, but with fire-power. This of course meant his gun, as always, and a bullet proof vest under his shirt. It was bright outside, but cold. Not extremely cold or anything, but cold enough for him to borrow a pair of black leather gloves from Spoony. Much as they kinda looked a little Darth Vader-ish, they were very warm, and fit well. Liz even remarked that they suited him. “If you say so,” he'd answered.
They gathered up in the den, near the doorway to the secret tunnel, ready to get started. Linkara did a quick head count, and realized they were one short. “Okay guys. Has anyone seen Pollo?”
There was a moment of everyone looking about before his question was answered. Pollo came floating down with a buzz, carrying what Linkara thought to be a surprising spring in his...er...hover, for someone he'd wronged just last evening.
Sorry I'm late, Linkara. He said as he approached the group. It appears I slept in once again.
“Hey, no worries. We wouldn't leave without you, anyway.” Linkara replied as earnestly as he could, crouching down and shooting the little robot a warm smile. Pollos' expression was unreadable, even to him. “L-listen, Pollo...” he stammered, “About last night...”
Forgiven and forgotten. Pollo said immediately. You were clearly in a bad way due to your argument with Insano, and did not mean what you said. I took none of it to heart.
“But...the thing you wanted to talk to me about...”
Wasn't that important.
“So...we're cool, then?”
There was a pause. Yes, Linkara. We're...cool.
This was satisfactory for Linkara. He gave Pollo a quick pat on the back before standing up. “Alright, people!” he said, feeling loads better than he did before. “We're good to go!”
And go they did, out the tunnel and through the streets and all the way back to PAOLAs base. Upon reaching said base, they discovered to their great dismay quite a bit more security than there'd been previously, which was saying something. Paola-bots were everywhere, lining up all sides of the building, grouping in fleets of at least fifty at a time. There was no way they could get a close enough distance without being noticed. Not before the first step was taken, anyway.
“Marzgurl, Joe, Lisa.” whispered Linkara, after they'd positioned themselves as close as they could possibly get. “Are you guys ready to move?”
“Ready as we'll ever be, Cap'n.”
Marzgurl said nothing, but cocked her gun blankly.
“Okay, here's what you're gonna do,” Linkara pointed over to the left side of the building, where he could clearly see a door with a yellow sign on it. “Go around to a vantage point as close to that entrance as possible. Make sure you're not seen until Liz gives the signal. Then make your move, and remember to divert as much attention to yourselves as possible. In other words...
“Go kick some metal fucking tail. We gotcha covered, man.” Joe said with a wink. Off he ran, his head low, Lisa and Marzgurl following suit.
Linkara then turned to Spoony and Insano. “You two, head over to behind the building and wait for the bots to start falling down, which they should do once the others have completed their part of the mission. Again, make sure you aren't seen. I don't know how many will be back there.”
Spoony raised his eyebrows. “should do? Did you just say they should start falling??”
“You knew you weren't signing on for a full-proof plan,” Insano remarked, staring Linkara right in the face, “We all did.”
Linkara looked away. “Just get out of here.”
Insano was off. Still grumbling, Spoony followed after him, slowed only slightly from all he was carrying.
At last, it was just the three of them. Linkara, Liz and Pollo. Just like old times, albeit less...nerve-racking. He turned to Liz. “You ready to do this?”
Liz smirked hollowly. “I was ready from the moment these things started killing our friends.”
Linkara nodded, and looked over at Pollo. “How about you, little buddy?”
“Glad to hear it. Where are Marzgurl and her team positioned?”
Liz peered over their vantage point. “It looks like they're right where they oughta be, Linkara.”
Linkara took a deep breath. This was it. This was the final battle.
“Give them the signal.”
